Retaking a Course and Grade Replacement for Undergraduate and Graduate Students (Effective Fall 2026)
When retaking a course for grade replacement:
- Earned grades of C, D or F are eligible for grade replacement. All other grades are not eligible.
- The highest grade will be used for degree applicability.
- Only one grade replacement may be used for a course. Once the highest grade is applied, only the earliest grade attempt will be excluded
from the UNT GPA. If you repeat a course three times, below is an example of what would occur:
- Fall 2021: ENGL 1310 Earned Grade of D
- Excluded from UNT GPA, earliest graded attempt
- Spring 2022: ENGL 1310 Earned Grade of C
- Highest grade, included in UNT GPA and used toward degree requirements
- Fall 2022: ENGL 1310 Earned Grade of F
- Included in UNT GPA, not earliest attempt or best grade
- Fall 2021: ENGL 1310 Earned Grade of D
- Courses may only be taken three times.
- Only courses taken at UNT are eligible for grade replacement.
- Remedial courses are not eligible for grade replacement.
- All grades for courses completed will remain on the student’s academic record and will be visible on their official UNT Transcript.
The Registrar’s Office will process grade replacement for retaken courses during the final grade reporting period at the end of each term.
Repeating courses may affect your current or future financial aid eligibility and Satisfactory Academic Progress. Please check with Financial Aid regarding your eligibility.
